Founded on a personal frustration. Built into a formal commitment.

Vibrant Health Advocates - Eta is a Scottish Charitable Incorporated Organisation based in Ayr, operating across South Ayrshire. We were founded by people who had watched elderly relatives miss appointments, delay prescription renewals, and feel increasingly shut out of their own healthcare as NHS services moved online. That personal frustration became a formal commitment: to ensure that digital transformation in the NHS never leaves the most vulnerable patients behind.

We are not a technology charity. We are a health equity charity that uses digital skills as a means to an end. The end is simple — every person in Ayrshire being able to book an appointment, view their test results, request a repeat prescription, update their contact details, and communicate with their GP practice without needing to rely on a family member or a third party. We believe that healthcare autonomy is a right, and that losing it to a confusing website is not inevitable.

Our work is grounded in the realities of Ayr and the surrounding area. This is a coastal town with a proud, independent population — many of whom are retired, some of whom live alone, and a significant number of whom are managing conditions like diabetes, heart disease, and COPD that require frequent interaction with NHS services. The digital tools that could make their lives easier instead feel alienating. We are here to change that, one session, one person, one successful NHS login at a time.

From a back room in a community centre to a network of navigators across South Ayrshire

Vibrant Health Advocates - Eta grew from a single conversation in the back room of a Ayr community centre in 2019. One of our founders, a retired district nurse, had spent three afternoons that week helping neighbours fill in NHS online forms they could not complete themselves. Each person was capable, each person wanted to manage their own health, and each person was being failed by the assumption that digital access was universal.

She rang two friends — a retired secondary school teacher and a local authority community development worker — and within a month the three of them had run their first informal digital health drop-in at Ayr Library. Twelve people attended. Nine of them had never successfully logged in to an NHS online account before. Seven of those nine left with a working login and their first prescription request submitted.

From that beginning we grew steadily, earning our SCIO status in 2021 and building a network of trained community navigators who understand both the technical landscape of NHS Scotland's digital services and the very human reasons why those services feel daunting.

We have never lost sight of what makes the work meaningful: the seventy-three-year-old woman who wept with relief when she could finally see her own blood test results without waiting for a letter; the man with macular degeneration who learned to use the large-text settings on the NHS app and regained the ability to manage his own medication. These are not small things. For the people involved, they are everything.

Dismantling digital exclusion in healthcare, persistently and practically

💜 Our Mission

Every person. Every device. Every postcode.

Vibrant Health Advocates - Eta exists to ensure that every person in Ayr and South Ayrshire can access their NHS healthcare digitally, regardless of their confidence with technology, the reliability of their internet connection, or the accessibility of their device. We do this through patient, personalised one-to-one support delivered in community settings, through plain-language resources developed with and for local people, and through ongoing advocacy with NHS Ayrshire and Arran to ensure that digital health tools are designed with older and less-connected users in mind from the outset.

We believe that digital exclusion in healthcare is a health inequality — one that shortens lives, increases anxiety, and concentrates harm in precisely the communities that already carry the greatest burden of ill health. Our mission is to dismantle that inequality in our corner of Scotland, persistently and practically, one person at a time.

Governed by Ayrshire people, for Ayrshire people

Vibrant Health Advocates - Eta is governed by a board of trustees who bring together expertise in community health, digital inclusion, financial management, and lived experience of the challenges our beneficiaries face. Our trustees are all connected to Ayrshire — they shop in the same shops, attend the same GP practices, and understand at first hand what it means to navigate healthcare in a coastal Scottish town.

Day-to-day delivery is led by our small staff team and a dedicated cohort of volunteer digital health navigators, all of whom complete our bespoke training programme before working with any member of the public.
